Getting started is half of success and most stop right before the start line without crossing it even once!
Do you know that each one of us walking to and from work or school comes up with a few ideas that could turn us into millionaires or even billionaires?! Almost all of us had the experience of coming up with an idea for a product or a service and wondered why nobody else has ever come up with it, we then went on with our lives without taking any action just to see the same product or service is offered to the marketplace and making headlines not to mention immense sales!
But why does that happen to so many of us? The answer is simple: ideas without action are of no value whatsoever and coming up with brilliant ideas is not reserved for the elites among us, rather it is quite common among the masses. The truth of the matter is that there is no shortage of brilliant ideas in our world and we come up with or hear amazing ideas almost on a daily basis. However, what we have a shortage of is action taken to realize and materialize those very ideas.
Coming up with good ideas proves invaluable but unless backed up by action it is quite useless
Do you know the number one reason why most ideas never become a reality for all to see? You might be thinking of a myriad of possible reasons such as lack of financial resources, insufficient experience, low education or intelligence, or simply being in the wrong city or country. In light of how common such answers might be, it astonishes us to know that the number one reason behind the regrettable fact that most ideas never get materialized is that we simply never begin taking any action regarding the idea!
When coming up with ideas think about ways of implementing them right away to obtain feedback
The reasons why so many of us find it hard to get started are multi fold. Firstly it stems from lack of self confidence, “if the idea was really good then I wouldn’t come up with it!” or so goes the inner monologue of the person who came up with the idea. Secondly, many of us lack the motivation to get started not because getting started demands a lot of time, energy, or other resources but rather we cannot get ourselves committed to go all the way through to finish what we started. Thirdly, most of us fail to tap in the power of social accountability, given that we fear other people’s judgment we feel uncomfortable with the social pressure that follows revealing our plans to those around us or simply fear that our ideas will get stolen and used by others, so what do we do as a result? We keep the idea to ourselves and eventually forget about it!
A swift look at the aforementioned reasons reveal that ultimately it is our fault that our ideas rarely get realized and the majority of obstacles are located within ourselves and caused by fear of failure and lack of motivation to see the idea through to its fruition. Now you might be wondering what lengthy therapy sessions one needs to undergo in order to overcome those inner barriers so that one becomes capable of realizing one’s ideas. The good news is that there is no need for any counseling, no need for a pep talk, no need for any esoteric means of changing your emotional state or belief system!
Most ideas need to be tested and modified until they are practical enough to obtain the desired outcome
After having met the kinds of people who ended up transforming their ideas into actions and comparing them with those who did not, I found one common trait among all of them: those who get to see their ideas become realities are invariably the ones who immediately get started with their ideas and begin taking whatever action they can in order to make their ideas less of an idea and more of a plan. It is just getting started that proves difficult for most us while ironically it is the very act of getting started that will do all the magic!
Thus, next time you came up with any idea that could enhance the quality of your life as well as the lives of those around you, just remember that nothing will change unless you begin taking some kind of action right away. So, just get started!
Using the secretary puzzle to make optimal decisions Listen to the entire blog post here
A common sense approach to the science of probabilities tells us that the more we look for something the higher our chances of finding the thing that we are looking for. For instance, the law of large numbers in mathematics describes that the true probability of something occurring can only be tested if we try that thing a large number of times and the more we try something the more accurately the results represent the statistical probability of something happening.
It is commonly believed that if we keep looking for something without ever giving up then we will eventually find it, so according to this belief if you want the next high paying client just keep prospecting and presenting your product or service to more and more people until you find the best possible client who pays more than all the previous prospects. Also in this way, if you want to find the ideal mate then you need to keep going on dates with more and more potential mates until you find the person who is the best option. That is by no means limited to finding the right person in your business or personal life as the same approach can be used to find the right career, the right property, the right travel agency, and so on!
Optimal stopping is the key to getting the right key of the right property but the principle is not just for real estate deals, it applies to every social pursuit that involves more than a few options
However, this common belief that drives many of us to keep searching and examining the next best thing lacks a substantial component: a break! When do we know when to stop and assume that the current option chosen is indeed the best option? After all, the grass is always greener on the other side. In the book Algorithms to Live By: The Computer Science of Human Decisions by Brian Christian and Tom Griffiths the authors propose an algorithmic solution backed up by the same mathematics that powers up some of the most advanced forms of artificial intelligence. Their solution is what mathematicians call optimal stopping.
The book offers a variety of algorithms that can help us make better decisions in life using logic and math rather than intuition or gut feeling
According to the book, on the quest to finding the best option in the shortest amount of time we need to avoid choosing the first few options since the odds are the first few options are not the best but at the same time we also should avoid keep moving on to the next and the next hoping that every subsequent option has a higher chance of being superior since it simply does not! That is precisely why we need to stop at the optimal time, which is to say, not too early and not too late!
For instance in your search for the right apartment, deal, spouse, university, etc you are better off not taking the very first few options that become available since the chances are there are other superior options available to you should you just continue your search; however, if after examining a few options you found that superior candidate then you should stop optimally and settle for that superior option assuming that from then on you will encounter with options that will be inferior to your current selected option or if there are any real superior options they will take you again through many inferior options until you find it which substantially increases the cost of finding an option that might be just a tad better than the good option you would have had if you had but stopped optimally saving a tremendous amount of time and resources in the process.
Optimal stopping can dramatically increase the likelihood of choosing the right romantic partner
Optimal stopping which is an algorithm extracted from the renowned secretary puzzle is simply about getting the best option at the optimal cost by refusing to accept the first option offered and continuing to look for superior options while avoiding the trap of an endless search. By stopping not too early and not too late we can insure the best decision at the most optimal cost, so for instance if there are 15 applicants available for a position it is best to give the job to the 9th or 10th applicant who fits the job description and call it a day.
Recruiters need to be aware of the secretary puzzle and choose the right candidate by optimal stopping
Using the principle of optimal stopping, which is one of the algorithms that some of the best types of artificial intelligence use to make decisions can be of immense help for humans in making decisions all across the board that bring about the best results at an optimal cost of time and other resources required to examine further options. So when you look for the next best thing, wait a little and examine further options but don’t wait too long, stop optimally!
Major changes in the global order are to take place between 2020 and 2030 the type of which has not been witnessed in our history
The 3rd decade of the 21st century has already begun with a big bang the type of which has been seen rarely in the history of the world and never before since the Declaration of Independence that formed the United States of America. A combination of social, economic, political, and public health crises that occur simultaneously is not something that we have often seen in the past and as thus global leadership is standing at a cross road with the need to make a clear decision in seemingly opposite directions.
This is a time that can make anyone a pessimist should they keep in mind only the events that are transpiring before their eyes; however, such a negative outlook stems from a myopic perspective that fails to take into consideration the short term nature of most crises and the transformation that follows them. A swift look at the horizon immediately brings under the spotlight numerous issues: a pandemic that could take months to end, an economic crisis that could take years to recover from, and a change in the world order that will take us a decade to fully grasp and understand.
The current crisis is not merely a health crisis but also economic, social, and political
Times of uncertainty have a way of bringing both the best and the worst in people and the recent protests following the death of George Floyd that kindled the fire of rage against racism is a clear example of that. Yet, irrespective of how ambivalent times can get, we can still discover meaning and purpose in the present moment and march steadily towards an ideal that can make our future brighter than the present.
The issue of racism has more than ever become important not just for the people of color but also for the white majorities in the US and all over the world
We have seen but a glimpse of the drastic changes that are going to take place between 2020 and 2030 and the scope of that global shift is beyond what we can fully fathom with our incomplete information of the present moment but facing with such rapid transformations ought not to prove alarming. After all, change is the only constant and epochs such as the one that we are entering into could very well spread the message of hope as a brief look at history of not only the United States but also of all nations proves that going through such turbulent times only means coming out stronger on the other side ready to tackle the challenges of a new world with new ways of living.
The root of changes in the upcoming decade is political in nature and is meant to establish a new world order but will the ideal be realized as originally intended?
Our lives will be quite different once we go through this decade and by then we have abandoned old ways of doing things just to replace them with new ones, however, having that long term perspective from today will make it far easier to avoid falling in the trap of negativity and doom’s day thinking that alas has crippled many among us. The decade ahead will not be easy but the foreseeable changes are all promising enough to make it worthwhile so instead of giving in to fear it is time to walk with courage and determination towards a 2030 that will in most cases be superior to what we had until before 2020. The decade of drastic changes is upon us so let’s be agents of change rather than victims of change and help others do the same!
Reframing your work as good enough for now as taught in the book designing your work life
Did you know that the majority of the global workforce are disengaged at work? The statistics in this regard are quite alarming and that is precisely why most of us need to take a good hard look at our careers given that we all tend to spend the majority of our lives at work. In the newly published book Designing Your Work Life coauthored by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans the concept of life design originally made popular by the two academicians at Stanford university has now been applied to our jobs and careers.
85% of the workforce worldwide are reportedly disengaged at work!
Feeling stuck at a job that you don’t like could be one of the least desired emotional states that one could ever wish for and the majority of the people who feel stuck do so because they cannot just leave their work and look for something new due to financial constraints. That is why the concept of reframing as put forth by the book is such a marvelous mental tool that we can use to temporarily deal with the agony of feeling stuck at work. Reframing your current work as good enough would surely imply passivity and lack of drive; however, once you add two magical words then the entire notion changes and those two words are: “for now”.
Good enough for now has such a strong psychological impact that the person literally moves from utterly disengaged at work to at least curious if not downright interested! An average person will have multiple jobs and careers in his or her lifetime and once the myopic perspective of seeing the drudgery of going to a work that you don’t like day after day and week after week is replaced with a long term perspective of all the careers or gigs that you will have in the future then the hustle and bustle of the present moment seems like a training ground for what is yet to come and you no longer live for the weekends and holidays! That attitude alone can make anyone more engaged at work because progress equals happiness and seeing your current job as a temporary means of making that progress towards your ideals will certainly make you happier and more interested at work.
If you are disengaged at work then you along with the way you perceive your job are also to blame
“Good enough for now” doesn’t mean that you deny the facts, it doesn’t mean that you will give up your search for new jobs, careers, projects, or clients, and it definitely doesn’t mean that a bad job can all of a sudden become good, it simply means that it is good enough for now while you simultaneously keep looking for new opportunities or go out of your way to expand your abilities. The truth of the matter is that almost any job can be reframed by thinking of it as good enough for now because any job can teach you something new and as you gain experience and ideally build up your contacts you can then expand your horizon and look for the next big thing. To find out more about the aforementioned cognitive toolkit and many other ways to improve your level of job satisfaction checkout the book Designing Your Work Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans.

Daniel Molgan shares with you tips on how to expand your life and business while under quarantine!
The coronavirus outbreak has managed to grind the wheels of the global economy into a halt, lock down cities, and place a great portion of the world’s population under quarantine stuck between four walls. Such a situation is sure to breed distress among most of us and in the process we could succumb to negativity and stop pursuing our goals that now seem out of reach far more than ever before.
However, the good news is that while being under a quarantine substantially limits your freedom, it can open up new doors of opportunity that help you get ahead in your life and career. My name is Daniel Molgan and in this blog post, I will show you how to make the most of the time while under quarantine by offering you ten tips on how to do just that:
1- Take a good look at your life and come up with short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals for your life and career
What are your biggest goals in life?
The modern world has compelled most of us to rush through life without ever finding sufficient time to sit quietly and reflect on our lives. The coronavirus pandemic and the quarantines set in place as a result of it can be used to finally take the time and think about your life until today. Your likes and dislikes, the things you want to achieve in life that you had postponed to a later date, and the quality of your relationships with other people are but a few of the issues that you can think about while stuck at home under quarantine. The answers to such questions can then help you come up with goals assigned with short-term deadlines of a few days to a few weeks, medium-term deadlines of a few months to a few years, and long-term deadlines that are five or more years down the line.
2- Plan each day, set a to do list, and create a daily schedule
What are your tasks for today?
Your daily routine is now taken away from you as work places, schools, universities, and stores have been closed. Most of us rely on these routines to go through our days but without them we fall pray to boredom, irritability, and negativity. By taking the time to plan each day and designing a schedule, ideally using the calendar of your phone, you can give each day a sense of order. Also writing a daily to do list can help you stay focused on the tasks that need to be done and avoid unnecessary distractions.
3- Reduce exposure to the news media as much as possible
Why are you watching the news? What can you do about it when stuck at home anyways?
As most industries are hit hard by the pandemic, the news media find themselves in an ideal situation that makes them quite the exception. As far as the news media is concerned this is their moment to cash in advertisement money and the best way to do so is by scaring their viewers so that they cannot help but to keep following up with the news to see when it all ends. The fact of the matter is that you will be aware of the end of this crisis once it happens without ever following the news because people around you are already doing that for you. Additionally, being under quarantine means you cannot do much about the events that are unfolding anyways so why bother getting upset by the headlines announcing the latest number of deaths or the other problems that arise in a pandemic? You can instead briefly go through the headlines every now and then instead of being glued to the TV or live streams of the news on your phone and keep abreast of the latest without constantly stressing over the latest headlines!
4- Avoid time wasters
Don’t you have anything better to do?
Randomly surfing on social media, binge watching on Netflix, playing mindless online games, over drinking, doing drugs of any kind legal or illegal as a means of dealing with boredom, being down and negative, trolling on the internet, starting fights with the people around you, making useless TikTok videos, sharing irrelevant content with your contacts online, and even holding your phone in your hand without a purpose are but a few of the examples of time wasters that you need to replace with productive and constructive goals so that this crisis does not waste your precious life.
5- Take care of your body and diet
Are you moving enough? How about starting to workout at home?
Being at home all the time can make anyone lazy and could lead to abandoning physical activities, obesity, and poor nutritional intake. That is why you need to make sure that you get enough exercise be it yoga, stretching, lifting weight, or simply walking around in your home as you listen to music or podcasts. Also be cautious of your calorie intake as overeating as a means of dealing with boredom is unfortunately quite common in times of quarantine.
6- Take care of your mind and emotional state
Are you practicing mindfulness?
Happiness is defined as the state of mind dubbed flow, the feeling of being absorbed in the moment and fully engaged with what we do. The state of flow is the sweet spot in between stress and boredom and in times of social isolation spent within the confines of one’s home it is so much easier to get more of the boredom and stress but no so much of the flow! That is precisely why you need to be aware of your emotional state and try to remain as positive and engaged with tasks that are meaningful to you as possible.
7- Take your career online
How can you work remotely?
The majority of work that we do can be done online, almost all communication based professions such as consultants, lawyers, advisers, managers, salespeople, educators, and journalists can continue working remotely. Small business owners can take their business online and offer their products via home delivery. Students can take part in sessions via Zoom or Skype, even photographers can use FaceTime to take excellent photos from their clients. Turn your home into an office and go to work online. This is the one advantage that people did not have in previous centuries when they had to deal with their own plagues so be grateful for the technology and make good use of it.
8- Go on intense learning
Have you signed up for an online course?
While learning in groups is proven to be more effective than learning alone that by no means reduces the efficiency, if not necessity of learning and studying alone. Hence, social distancing does not hinder your ability to begin intensive study in your field of activity and develop your skills and abilities. Many online resources offer free courses to anyone wishing to become more knowledgeable. After all, to earn more you need to learn more!
9- Create alone time for all members of your family
Do you let your girlfriend be alone by herself while under quarantine?
Did you know that divorce, domestic violence, and fights all dramatically increase during mandatory quarantines? One of the biggest reasons for this phenomenon is that couples and families don’t arrange for alone times so that they could be away from each other for a few hours each day and mimic time away at work during normal days. Simply assign different rooms or parts of the house to different members of the family and give each alone time to substantially reduce the likelihood of arguments or fights.
10- See this as a once in a life time opportunity to get ahead of the competition
Are you ready to get ahead and win the competition?
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once said: “the heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night.” Understand that the coronavirus pandemic and the quarantines associated with it have put billions of people into sleep marked by degradation, laziness, and loss of motivation. That means that it does not matter what your field might be, the majority of your competitors have dropped the towel and given up, this is your moment to get ahead of the competition by outworking them. For the achievers, this is the moment of the truth, the once in a life time opportunity to get so much ahead of the competition that they can never catch up with you long after the crisis is over!
The coronavirus pandemic will be over but the time that it takes until we get there will never be returned back to you which is why it is my sincere hope that reading this post acts as the first step to help you get ahead in life and career under quarantine!
